Using the File Manager

  1. Logging in to the File Manager
  2. Files already in your new account
  3. Checking used account space
  4. Creating a new file
  5. Uploading new files
  6. Editing a file
  7. Copying a file
  8. Previewing an edited file
  9. Deleting a file
  10. Renaming a file
  11. Creating a new directory
  12. Switching to a subdirectory
  13. Moving a file to another directory
  14. File Manager and FTP file conflict
  1. Logging In to the File Manager
Simply type your username and password in at RR's Login Page.
If you've forgotten/lost your username or password, go to RR's Account Information page.

  2. Files already in your new account
There are several files already in your account when you first join. These files were parts of features that RR never implemented, so you can delete them all... EXCEPT form.html. This holds a sample of the form you can use on your site to have people send e-mail to you through your site. If you delete this, there's a copy of the form sample on RR's Form-to-Email Help/Info page.

NOTE: If you have signed up for FTP, four files will appear in your account as well. Be sure not to delete those! See the FTP page for info on those.

  3. Checking used account space
You get 20 Meg to work with at RR, which is way more than enough for almost any average site. However, if you've got a large site, you may want to keep an eye on your space used.

On the right side of your file manager are some tan areas with numbers in them.

    • Disk Space Allowed: Your allowed disk space is 20 Meg. This is shown on your File Manager as 20000 kb. (1 Meg = 1000 kb)

    • Disk Space Used: This is how much you've used so far. If it says 1354 kb, for example, then you have used 1.35 Meg.

    • Disk Space Free: This is how much space you have left to use. If it says 18646 kb, for example, then you can still add up to 18.6 Meg of material to your site.

    • Amount Transfered: This is not used. Just ignore it.

  4. Creating a new file
You can create a new file from scratch using the file manager. At the top of the dark green area to the right on your file manager, it says New Text Document. Type in the name of the new file you wish to create, such as mynewfile.html, then click the Create Text File button. You'll be taken to a page where you can type in your HTML by hand.

  5. Uploading new files
In the file manager, first make sure you are in the Directory that you wish to place the file in. Then, in the dark green area to the right on your file manager, you will see Upload File. Click the Browse button to find the file you wish to upload on your computer, or type in the full path to the file. Once you have done this, click the Upload New Binary File button. When the page changes, your file should be uploaded. The page you will see will tell you the size of the file you uploaded, and give you a direct URL so you can instantly see the file. Click on the Return to RedRival Internet Services link to return to your file manager.

To upload more than one file at a time, you can use WinZip or similar program to put all your files together into one .zip file. Upload the .zip file according to the above instructions. Once the .zip file is in your directory, there will be an unzip link next to it in the file manager. Click that, and all the files you zipped will be placed in your directory.

Note that there is a 5 Meg upload limit on any one file. So if you need to upload more than this, split the .zip file into smaller .zip files. If you have a file larger than 5 Meg, you will have to use FTP.

  6. Editing a file
Simply click on the edit link to the right of the file you wish to edit.

  7. Copying a file
Click the edit link of the file you wish to copy. On the Edit page, enter the filename of the new file. When you click Save Document, the original file will remain, and a new file with the new name you entered will be created.

  8. Previewing a file
On the Edit page, it says to "click the black image" to preview a file. This black image does not exist. The only way to do this for now is to save the file, then click on the link to view it. This may be fixed when the new version of the file manager is implemented.

  9. Deleting a file
Just click on the link that says delete to the right of the file you wish to delete. At this time, you can only delete one file at a time using the file manager. This may change when the new version of the file manager is implemented.

IMPORTANT: Be absolutely certain that you wish to delete the file, as there is no "Are you sure?" message when you click it!

  10. Renaming a file
There is a bug in the file manager when you try this, so read this carefully:

In your main directory only, you can mark the radio button to the left of the file name, type the new name of the file in the text box (located at the bottom of the list of files), and click the "Rename" button. You can only rename one file at a time.

In all subdirectories, the best way to rename a file using the file manager is to copy the file using the instructions above with the new file name. Then delete the old file.

  11. Creating a new subdirectory
The last feature in the green area on the right side of your file manager says New Directory. Type in the name you wish to give your subdirectory, then hit Create Directory.

  12. Switching to a subdirectory
To move to a lower-level directory, find the name of the directory in alphabetical order in your list of files. To the right of the directory name will be a link that says chdir (change directory). Click it.

To move to a higher-level directory, there will be text that says [higher level directory] just above the start of your list of files. Click the chdir link to the right of this.

  13. Moving a file to another directory
Because of a bug in the file manager, this isn't always possible, so read this carefully:

To move a file from your main directory only to a lower directory, you can click the radio button next to the file, then type in the full path of where the file should be located along with the file name as if renaming the file, and click Rename. For example, if you have the file myfile.html in your main directory, and you wish to move it into the subdirectory goodgrief, you would type goodgrief/myfile.html and hit Rename.

If the file is in a subdirectory, the only thing you can do short of using FTP is to copy the file onto your computer, delete the file in the directory you wish to remove it from, then upload the file into the directory you wish to locate it.

*This bug will hopefully be fixed in the new version of the file manager.
