Using FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

  1. Signing up for FTP
  2. New files in your account
  3. Changing your FTP password
  4. Deleting FTP access
  5. Accessing your site via FTP
  6. Uploading files
  7. Download FTP programs
  8. Other questions?
  9. File Manager and FTP file conflict
  1. Signing up for FTP
FTP (File-Transfer Protocol) works separately from the online file manager. Thus, you will have to sign up for it after you get your account at RR. You can do this from the RR FTP Signup Utility. You will no longer be e-mailed a special password for FTP only. (See password info below.)

  2. New files in your account
When you sign up for FTP, four files will appear in your account. These files are:
    1. .Xdefaults
    2. .bash_logout
    3. .bash_profile
    4. .bashrc

DO NOT DELETE THESE! They are necessary for FTP to work. If you accidently delete one or more, you will have to signup for FTP again.

  3. Changing your FTP password
Under the old system, you had to deal with an auto-generated odd number-letter combination password that you were sent through email after signing up for FTP access. This is no longer the case. Now, under the newer system, your FTP password is exactly the same as your RedRival member account password. Therefore, an email confirmation is no longer needed and you won't receive one. Just wait the designated hour (maybe less) after FTP signup, and you should be able to access the server through your FTP client software. Note: Most FTP programs will save your password for you so you won't have to enter it every time.

If someone has gained access to your FTP password and you need to change it so they can't access your account, you would have to Login to your File Manager and then, once you have accessed the File Manager, click on the Change Password link at the top of that page. After that you would need to signup for FTP again. This will validate the new member password and invalidate the old one, for FTP access.

  4. Deleting FTP access
If you decide to use the online manager and wish to remove your FTP access that you signed up for, there is no "delete FTP" function. However, deleting the four files listed above will prevent FTP from working, so it's just as good.

  5. Accessing your site via FTP
    Important notes!
    1. Be sure to enter redrival.com as the host name, not ftp.redrival.com. This is a common mistake!
    2. Under the old system, if your RR username was longer than 8 characters, you had to enter only the first 8 characters when using FTP. Example: If your username was blockofwood, you'd use blockofw as your FTP username. You would still have used your full username when using the online file manager and in the URL to your site: http://redrival.com/blockofwood. This is no longer the case! You may use your FULL user/membername for BOTH the File Manager and FTP.

In short, to log in to your site via FTP:

    • host name: redrival.com
    • username: Your full username
    • password: Your member account password

  6. Uploading files
Use an FTP program (see below) to add files to your site.

One important thing to remember is to upload your files in the proper "mode". Most programs have an "auto" choice, where files will get uploaded automatically to your site in the proper mode. Make sure this option is chosen, as typical sites without CGI and such don't have to worry about specifying which mode.

  7. FTP programs
You can download these free from the web.

    1. Windows
Some programs you can use are:
      • WS_FTP - The most common program. Freeware version.
      • Cute FTP - A shareware program that's a bit fancier.
      • Smart FTP - A new program that has some minor bugs, but generally works great, and is completely free.

    2. Macintosh
Two very good programs for the Mac is:
      • Fetch - It says it's shareware, but you are not required to pay. Easy to use.
      • Anarchie - Another good FTP client software program for the Macintosh

  8. Other questions?
If this page does not answer your question, feel free to ask questions about FTP on RedRival's FTP, File Manager, Telnet & CGI Forum. Matt (from RR Staff), Forum Staff, and several users who regularly view the forums will try to help you.
